    Scared

Ok been pounding the streets a bit, the most i have managed to do is 8 miles, and that was a run walk run walk (well more jog than run). Will anyone esle be doing a run walk run walk sort of race? Or is this full of serious athletes and not a place for amateurs?

Hopefully i will finish before they let the traffic go through, the is my first race, i have only every done 5 km before. Also just found out got rejected from FLM today booooo. Gonna start looking into charities now.

Dont worry Biz, me and my running partner Shirley are far from being able to run the distance. I think we are going to have to be in the more fast walking than running category and will be sure to keep out of everyones way, especially as I have gone and injured my knee with less than a few days to go! We are just telling ourselves we`re doing it for the charity and we`re not there to beat a time etc. Our only panic is that according to the lists on the website we are running in different start groups! I keep taking deep breaths and trying to convince myself it will be ok, espacially due to the knee! Very frustrating so close to the event! I hope we're not laughed off the course! lol

Oh good, so it's not just me who thinks they will be last! The most I did in training was 10 miles, and I felt like I'd died for the rest of the day! And when I am out running I seem to be passed by everyone, kids on scooters, pensioners, etc. My aims are to get round (anyhow) and to not require medical attention. As this is my first race over 5km I think those aims are about as high as I'd like to aim.

    Good luck

Oh thank you thank you!  I was starting to worry that I was the only person going that was going to have to do a fair amount of walking!  PHEW!  My goal is to finish.  That's it.  If it can do it before they re-open the roads and people are returning to work on Monday morning then even better!

Good luck to you all and thanks for making me feel so much better.. i was getting so nervous.  I feel a bit more relaxed now!

No definatly not just you, i have been pounding the strrets since June and done 10k 3 times a week with some runs of 10+ miles but am still worried about the big day, have i dont enough, can i do 13 miles.

I have never done anything like this before and some poeple have said you hsould have done a 10k first but i guessed if i was doing 10k 3 times a week then that would not help, so wanted to stretch myself.

I think we will find on the day that the mlies will go faster than we think especially the first half, i have no doubt it will get harder in the second half when we pass the distances we normally have done but the crowd and hype of the day will drag us along the final few miles.

I see from here people that have done less than me and others more, expect you see the same and i expect we will all end up at the finish some more knackered than others, some faster than others, just take you time dont get carried away trying to keep up with others and just enjoy it.

    Re: Scared

my first race was the great south run last year where i was convinced i was gonna be last! I couldn't believe it when i started overtaking people and i came far from last! I then did 2 half marathons in feb this year in 2 hours 5 mins which i was pleased with again not coming last. I think there was a lot of people there who had clearly done no training at all thinking it would be easy to run 13 miles which it obviously isn't but running with several thousand other people does help. I am not a fast runner at all and do have a dodgy knee at present but am really looking forward to tomorrow even if it does rain as predicted.

    Good luck.

    Re: Scared

    Hi.

Although I started training hard a few months ago and planned to run the course in under 2 hours. After hurting my back and a two week holiday of drinking and eating too much in America I knew that this was now impossible. The final straw is now having a stinking cold.

I actually cancelled yesterday morning because I too was scared of making a foul out of myself but found I felt really down. Phoned back 2 hours later to say I had changed my mind then couldnt sleep last night thinking I would make a foul out of myself again.

Your words have really cheered me up and am now really looking forward to it.

Come on guys. Most of us are doing this for charity. Lets just enjoy the atmosphere. We wont get shot if we walk part of the way and imagine how great we will feel when we cross that line. PLUS

we can always tell our mates we did it in one hour twenty. heehee.

Im beginning to think that those of us at the back will have more fun and laughter than the competitive runners sprinting off into the distance lol Because of my knee Im now very much just wanting to take in the atmosphere, get to the finish and know that I raised money for a worthwhile cause! Good luck everyone. Dont be afraid to join us at the back ;0)
